And one of its most beautiful cities. And Matera, capital of Basilicata, as you probably know, has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2019. So 2019 will be a special year for this beautiful, unique city.
  • Following an intensive candidacy period in 2014, Matera, Basilicata has been chosen as the 2019 European Cultural Capital. In order to prepare the city for the events of 2019, the Italian government has destined 400 million for the development and improvement of all aspects of the city.

    Born and raised in Lagonegro, a little village in the South of Italy, Chef Luigi came to America by chance and settled in Washington, D.C. at a time when the city was hardly an exciting place to work for a restaurateur. “When I saw what this city’s restaurants were offering, I realized there was so much more I could do,” Luigi tells us. And as a matter of fact, he did!

    In the ninth edition of Città dei Sassi Fashion Awards, an international competition for high fashion stylists, Sardinian designer Mara Piras came out on top in Matera.
  • Aglianico is a black grape grown in Southern Italy, mainly in Campania and Basilicata. In Basilicata it is made into a wine called Aglianico del Vulture, because the best vineyards are located in and around Mount Vulture, the extinct volcano in the northern area of the province of Potenza. The wine was awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1971 and the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 2011. It is the region’s only DOCG wine.

    Matera simply is one of the most unusual and memorable cities in Italy. Basilicata's favorite city was just picked as European Culture Capital 2019, beating some all time-favorites Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia-Assisi, Ravenna and Siena. The initiative is meant to highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, to celebrate the cultural features Europeans share, to increase European citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural area, and to foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.
  • The camera of Italian artist/filmmaker Michelangelo Frammartino captures the men of the village of Satriano, in Basilicata, who each year participated in a ritual where they covered themselves with ivy until they were totally unrecognizable and became one with nature.
