World-famous Italian chef Lidia Bastianich has a story as a refugee that transcends the culinary industry. Lidia was born following the conclusion of World War II, a time when European countries were still settling border disputes. As a young girl, she grew up among three different cultures, each with a profound influence on her. Today, as a professional, Lidia’s childhood experiences and her family ties continue to prove monumental in her continued success.
Little Italy’s Italian American Museum hosted a seminar on “The Mediterranean Diet: Present, Past and Future,” featuring presentations by experts on the subject. The seminar occurred on the heels of the passage of a new law in Calabria that looks to promote the Mediterranean Diet in relation to Nicotera, the birthplace of the Diet.

On Sunday, November 12, the Italian American Museum hosted its “Ambasciatore Awards Ceremony and Dinner” at the Crest Hollow Country Club located in Woodbury, New York. The event was a chance to acknowledge the contributions of various Italians and Italian-Americans in promoting the Italian culture and also supporting the Italian American museum. Founder and President of the museum Joseph V. Scelsa also explained the Museum’s origins and where it’s headed in the near future.

The Order Sons of Italy in America is an organization that has been assisting the Italian-American community since the beginning of the twentieth century. This past week, the Grand Lodge of the State of New York Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America held its quarterly Plenary Session in Blauvelt, New York in order to review important documentation pertaining to the operation of the New York lodges, which have been very active in providing scholarships for college students.
On occasion of the Settimana della Lingua italiana nel mondo, The Association of Italian American Educators assembled an intimate gathering on Monday night to reflect on the promotion of the Italian culture in the United States. The event was held during the 17th annual “Settimana della Lingua italiana nel mondo,” which aims to promote the Italian language and culture on an international scale. Guest speakers that night included actor and producer Tony Lo Bianco and distinguished Italian-American studies scholar Dr. Vincenzo Milione.
Italy’s world-renowned opera composer Giuseppe Verdi marched in this year’s Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan. Verdi was portrayed by actor, director, and playwright Massimiliano Finazzer, who spoke to i-Italy about his experience marching up New York’s Fifth Avenue dressed as the famous composer.
