  • Earthquake in Abruzzo: National Emergency in Italy

“You all know that this is a very sad day for our country. The whole national community is mobilized for the terrible calamity that killed so many of our fellow citizens in the region of Abruzzo.”  The Consul General Francesco Maria Talò used these words today in opening the first conference of the project "Obiettivo Futuro", where the young representatives of NOVA (Italian MBA Association) where meeting Mr. Massimo Capuano, President and CEO of Borsa Italiana Spa. The Consul saluted the attending guests expressing his deep sorrow for the over 150 people that lost their lives last night, when a violent earthquake hit central Italy.

“It is a moment of commitment and solidarity towards the victims of the earthquake and we all appreciate the offers of help and assistance that we are constantly receiving from foreign governments and friends, starting with the US President Barack Obama, who expressed his deepest sorrow for our victims at a press conference in Ankara, where he is now in official visit. We are also grateful to all the individuals and associations of every kind that are showing great closeness to our people.

Our Civil Protection Department announced today that there is no need at the moment for emergency assistance from abroad: rescuers started working from the very first minute, reaching the hit zones almost in real time. We all know that our civil defense system is considered to be one of the most modern and efficient worldwide. We had the opportunity to discuss this with the head of the Deptartment Guido Bertolaso, during the conference we held last December in New York to celebrate the Centenary of the Messina earthquake.

The region of Abruzzo is mountainous and disseminated with small and very antique towns. However, we are confident that our Civil Protection will do the best possible to help the survivors of this terrible tragedy”.

The Italian-American House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also warmly expressed her solidarity in a statement regarding the earthquake:

“Today, I called President Berlusconi on behalf of my colleagues in the Congress to express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who suffered death and destruction in the earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy. (…) President Berlusconi and the Italian government have our steadfast support as they search for survivors, comfort those affected, and move toward helping the people of Abruzzo rebuild their lives. (..) Having visited Italy as part of a U.S. delegation in the aftermath of the earthquake in Southern Italy in 1980, I have seen firsthand the courage of the Italian people in the face of a similar tragedy. I hope that it is some comfort that so many people throughout the world are thinking of them and praying for them at this difficult time."

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake jolted central Italy early Monday.

The earthquake struck at 3:32 a.m. (1:32 a.m. GMT Sunday) about 95 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Rome and at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). More than 26 towns and villages were hit in and around L'Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region.

At least 207 people died and more than 1,500 were injured. ''It's the worst tragedy since the start of the millennium,'' said Civil Protection chief Guido Bertolaso.

At this moment 4,000 rescuers are at work and are extracting people from the rubble.

A camp with 2,000 tents, each capable of housing 8-10 people, is currently being set up and will host those who lost their homes in the disaster. Survivos have also been reserved around 4,000 beds in hotels in the area.

The European Union, the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Greece, Israel, Poland and Afghanistan were among countries who immediately contacted the Italian government: while the United States President Barack Obama sent his condolences to the families hit by the quake as he arrived for an official visit in Turkey, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he was ''deeply shocked'' by the news of the quake and offered to send aid.

Within minutes after the quake, witness and solidarity groups were mushrooming up on the Internet.

Sicilian Film Festival raises its curtains again. The 4th edition in Miami

The ultimate selection of film participants is  finally revealed for the IV Sicilian Film Festival of Miami, the American display of Sicilian cinematography. It will take place from the 12th to the 19th of

April, 2009 at the Miami Beach Cinematheque under the patronage of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. The Sicilian Film Festival promotes the Sicilian culture and cinema here in the United States. It will offer many attractions and surprises and give tribute to those Sicilians that took part in the history of worldwide cinema.  Those who are not Sicilian can also receive an homage by the Sicilian Film Festival.

Last year the prestigous Carreer Award was given to Franco Nero who filmed many movies in Sicily.  This year Franco Nero has decided to return to the Sicilian Film

Festival where his film Diceria dell'untore, taken from the novel of Bufalino, will be shown.  Nero shot his film with his wife Vanessa Redgrave.

As various critics have reported, the Sicilian Film Festival is worthy of the top spotlight in all the world regarding the existence of a real and true "Sicilian Cinema" and international recognition.  Quite a number of films were added to the selection aside from the Italian productions and foreign films.  MGM in Hollywood sent famous film Dressed To Kill, by Bryan DePalma, produced by Sicilian, George Litto, who will host a meeting at the festival in order to tell his story about his fortunate career.

Some of the titles in the competition section that will surely be of interest are:

The Sicilian Girl by Marco Amenta, distributed at the same time in Italy,

    The Viceroys of Roberto Faenza, a great transposition from the novel written by Federico De Roberto;

    Cover Boy by Carmine Amoroso, the Italian film that won the highest number of awards at the international film festivals, produced, among the others, by Augusto Allegra, who will also conduct a conference on his productions of Sicilian cinematography;

and films by young Sicilian writers like, Lisa Romano (If You Close Your Eyes).

In addition there will be numerous documentaries, some presented by Gambero Rosso, about the culinary tradition and also The Black Vessels by Luigi Valente about the tuna-fishing net of Favignana and others about Sicily by Vincenzo Consolo; some other documentaries will be about various festivals and celebrations on in Sicily with shots in Palermo, Trapani, Selinunte, Marsala, Mozia, Ustica, Sant' Angelo Muxaro, San Biagio Platani, Prizzi, Terrasini, Cinisi, San Martino delle Scale, Etna, Siracusa, Vara and other places.

This year also La Sicilia di Montalbano will be one of the special events (with the collaboration of Antonio Bruni, the director of RAI for international festivals). It returns for the second time to bring the American public the new series of televised fiction interpreted by Luca Zingaretti about the novels of Andrea Camilleri. An international jury will give first prize to the feature films for best film, best production, best performance and best technical contribution;  there are one or two scheduled awards for best short film that are signed by some of the young writers, these are added to demonstrate the vitality and the future of Sicilian cinema;  furthermore , the IV Sicilian Film Festival will exclusively present the six short film finalists in the section of the Sicilian short Films at the Taormina Film Festival, directed by Deborah Young.

To complete the playbill, there will be parties and cocktails, press conferences, round tables, lessons, concerts, gastronomic events and much more. The Sicilian Film Festival is making Sicily known and appreciated throughout the world and is the creation of Sculptor, Emanuele Viscuso, who also acts as its President. The Artistic Director is Salvo Bitonti, whose accomplishments are: theater and film director and teacher of the History of Cinema.

The 1st of April an event of SFF will be also in Tegucigalpa, Honduras,  with the support of the Italian Embassy which is promoting a dedicated event to the festival in which the following films will be shown:  Letters From Sicily by Manuel Giliberti, the short film, Fedra by Salvo Bitonti and the documentary Stories of Sicily by Sasa' Salvaggio, already awarded at the Sicilian Film Festival.

The latest news, is a proposed project, The SFF is working on for the Sicilian Film Festival Web TV that may have its television cameras already for the next event. Let's remember that at the 2nd film festival event, the Mayor of Miami Beach officially proclaimed Sicilian Film Festival Day and granted the keys to the city to its creator Emanuele Viscuso. To promote a wide range of Sicilian culture Viscuso has also already created the International Festival of Organ Music in the Churches of the Historic Princedom of Castelbuono (F.I.M.O.) in Sicily. The first event was very successful since it was promoted in collaboration with the Sicilian Film Festival. Viscuso, as president also of this new festival, has confirmed the artistic direction of Diego Cannizzaro also for the second event of the FIMO that will be held in Castelbuono, Sicily from the 8th to the 14th of September 2009.

The exposition will feature a reproduction of an  Italian “Piazza”, were those present will have the opportunity to encounter producers and artisans who will be showcasing their works  in the United States for the first time.

The hosts might recognize some of the products exposed: they are the same carried in the most glamorous Roman boutiques at elegant Piazza Navona  or in Via Veneto (where Fellini's  "La Dolce Vita" was set). Some others are more similar to those found in Piazza dei Martiri and Via dei Mille in Naples... Samplings of Italian treats will be offered all day long in this new, cozy place where the visitors  will also have a chance to buy authentic Italian-made products such as pasta, cookies, chocolate, canned tomatoes, clothing, and ceramics.

This initiative has been promoted by the Italian Consul General in Philadelphia, Luigi Scotto, the Director of the North America Division of the Italian Tourism Board, Riccardo Strano and the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce.

The Philadelphia Flower Show, the oldest and largest indoor show of its kind, is produced by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and presented by PNC Bank. PHS has more than 15,000 members throughout the country. Offering hundreds of gardening programs year-round, it is considered the nation’s leading authority in the field of urban gardening. Justice Dominic R. Massaro Re-Elected ASILM President

What is arguably the most exclusive Italian American entity in the United States —
its members are qualified on merit by the Italian Government and each is conferred with a degree of knighthood by the President of Italy —
has-re-elected New York Supreme Court Justice Dominic R. Massaro to an unprecedented third two-year term of office as its president. Justice Massaro was the first to step forward in support of the IADP (Italian American Digital Project)  when it was launched last year. His re-election will make him the longest serving Society president since its founding five decades ago.

Headquartered in New York City, the American Society of the Italian Legions of Merit is comprised solely of those individuals residing here who have been so decorated. It engages in chivalric, diplomatic and beneficent activity in furtherance of the friendship between the United States and Italy.

Justice Massaro is one of only a dozen Americans of Italian descent to hold Italy’s highest decoration — Cav. Di Gran Croce della Repubblica Italiana. His presidency is credited with having totally revamped the Society.

    ASILM Mission Statement

The American Society of the Italian Legions of Merit serves as the chief reference point in the United States for all links between the chivalric world of the Italian state and its decorati residents here.

Now in its fifth decade, the Society is comprised exclusively of those individuals who, because of some personal quality or the rendering of some special service, have been decorated by the Republic of Italy. The decorations are conferred in one of five Order of Chivalry awarded by decree of the President of Italy (who by virtue of office is “Head” of all Italian Orders), each internationally recognized as rooted in the umbilicus of Italian history and as a prerogative of Italian sovereignty.

Founded on the basis of strengthening the traditional bonds of friendship existing between Italy and the United States, the Society is national in scope, international in spirit, and functions at the highest levels of the chivalric, diplomatic and beneficent arenas. Historically providing financial assistance to a wide range of cultural and humanitarian endeavors both here and abroad, its prestige as a pre-eminent institution, headquartered in New York, ranks the Society as an important American situs for focusing the shared interests of both nations to a wider audience.
