The Week of the Italian Language Takes Over the Web

The Italian Consulates and Cultural Institutes in the USA have designed a rich calendar of events to celebrate both the 11th week of the Italian language and the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

From Washington to Los Angeles, from Houston to San Francisco: the 11th Week of the Italian Language in the World (October 17-21, 2011), which this year is titled “Buon Compleanno Italia!” (“Happy Birthday Italy!”), features a program full of events to be held here in the United States.

The Italian Embassy, together with all the Consulates and Cultural Institutes located on American territory, created an intense calendar of events, including, in concomitance with the anniversary of the 150 Years of the Italian Unification, the introduction of Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses of Italian language and culture that will allow the students of American schools to obtain recognized, university level credits, thanks to the initiative of the Italian Government and the financial support of the Italian-American community.

This year, the Week of the Italian Language in the USA arrives also on the web with two initiatives created entirely for students and teachers: the new website of the Osservatorio sulla Lingua Italiana, US Speaks Italian (www.usspeaksitalian.org) is aimed, within the AP program, at helping students, parents and teachers interact and be informed, while the new interactive portal Italy4Kids, was created by the Italian Embassy to provide young Americans, ages 5 to 18, with information on our country and on learning the language in the schools of Italian.

“Learning Italian is getting more popular in the United States,” declared the Italian Ambassador in Washington, Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata as he was unveiling the American program. The data is very positive: “according to the statistics of the Modern Language Association – continued Ambassador Terzi – between 1998 and 2009 the number of students of Italian in the American Universities has raised about 60%, and has exceeded 80 thousand, meanwhile the number of high school graduates that learn Italian has gone up from 65 thousand to 78 thousand between 2004 and 2008.”

The list of the main events is available on the Embassy’s website: www.ambwashingtondc.esteri.it

Stellar Line Up of Italian Chefs Join New York City’s Top Chef

IDENTITÀ GOLOSE, a culinary organization whose mission is to highlight the best of contemporary Italian cuisine, will host its second annual IDENTITÀ NEW YORK at EATALY on October 31st and November 1st.

The two-day congress devoted to Italian gastronomy will showcase Italy’s and America's top chefs, winemakers and artisan producers. Launched in Milan in 2004, IDENTITÀ GOLOSE promotes the culinary excellence of each Italian region and honors the top Italian and American chefs who seek to reinterpret traditional Italian cuisine.

IDENTITÀ NEW YORK will feature two days of cooking demonstrations with 12 top chefs, wine classes from prestigious Italian winemakers as well as tasting events with leading food producers of Italy.

This year’s congress will follow a new format; a stellar line up of Italy’s most acclaimed chefs including Massimo Bottura, Moreno Cedroni, Carlo Cracco, Gennaro Esposito, Davide Scabin, and Emanuele Scarello, will be paired with six of New York City’s top chefs including Mario Batali, Jonathan Benno, Wylie Dufresne, Mark Ladner, Missy Robbins and Michael White to discuss contemporary trends in Italian gastronomy and prepare signature dishes for the attendees to sample.

The two days of exceptional cooking will culminate in a six-course dinner prepared by all 12 chefs and hosted by chef, author, restaurateur, and TV personality Lidia Bastianich at Eataly’s Birreria on November 1st.

“There's a huge demand for products of authentic Italian quality in the world today. We can no longer be satisfied with food that is only superficially Italian or that continues to promote stereotypes from the past," says IDENTITÀ GOLOSE Founder Paolo Marchi. “Our mission at IDENTITÀ GOLOSE is to share with the world Italy’s rich regional cuisines as it is interpreted in a contemporary context by these great Italian Chefs, who also add their own thoughts and unique experiences.”

“We at Eataly are thrilled to be given the opportunity to host IDENTITÀ NEW YORK for the second consecutive year, an event which not only fits within the physical space of Eataly, but which represents a natural marriage with the very core of our establishment,” says Oscar Farinetti, Founder of Eataly. “More than just a culinary showcase, IDENTITÀ is an educational event which honors modern day chefs and explores the processes in which they reinvent traditional recipes and classic techniques every day in their places of work. This collaboration fits organically within the culture of Eataly, which is focused on exploration, learning, and discovery.”

In addition to the cooking demonstrations, there will be 1 hour-long wine classes at La Scuola di Eataly led by some of the most renowned wineries in Italy including: Allegrini, Antinori, Bastianich, Ferrari, Fontanafredda, Frescobaldi and Lungarotti as well as tastings of gastronomic specialties and products from regions across Italy.

Italy at the Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival

More than 3500 foodies attended the Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival where Italy was, for the third time in a row, the main international partner. The collaboration between the Italian Trade Commission of New York and the Preservation Society of Newport County has resulted in the successful organization of a series of promotional events that featured top quality wines and authentic Italian food products.

The historic Rosecliff Mansion and Marble House were the majestic locations that framed each happening. Among the several activities presented by the Italian Trade Commission, the seminar “Perusing the Peninsula- An Exploration of the Wines of Italy,” was particularly interesting.

The event, organized in collaboration with the American edition of the magazine La Cucina Italiana, introduced the 150 guests who attended to a special selection of wines coming from Italian production areas that still are little known to the American market. The tasting, led by Michael Wilson and Ian Wolff, was incredibly successful and raised questions on ideal wine and food pairings.

The seminar welcomed the Consul General of Italy in Boston, Giuseppe Pastorelli, the Deputy Mayor of Newport, Justin McLaughlin, and the CEO of the Preservation Society of Newport County, Trudy Coxe; they all have praised the perfect match between Italian wines and the historic mansions of Newport County.

“A few months ago, the Italian Trade Commission developed two promotional projects on authentic Italian food products and high quality wines. The goal of both is to educate the American market. Specifically, the program Fashion of the Vine aims to promote high quality wines in fashion and lifestyle focused events. Events that interest a young and trendy audience. The other project, Perusing the Penisula - An exploration of the Wines of Italy wants, instead, to promote Italian wines in the major Wine and Food Festivals, held throughout the country outside of the biggest metropolitan areas with the goal to reach a more traditionalist audience thus, in many cases, a slice of the consumer world that is harder to get to. The Italian Trade Commission is a partner of great operational importance to the wide network of American wine importers,” Aniello Musella, Italian Trade Commissioner in New York said.

The Wine and Food Festival of Newport County welcomed several celebrities, who all praised the quality of Italian products. Among them we find Lidia Bastianich, Ray Isle and Mark Oldman.

The importers were also present and their presence was definitely appreciated. Banfi Vintners, Palm Bay Imports, Dark Star Imports, Wine World Wide Inc., Domaine Select Wine Estates, World Wide Wine, Tre Monti Vineyards, Cascina San Cassiano Foods, Dell’Orto Olive Oil, and Cavedoni Aceti Balsamici participated at the Grand Tasting, presenting a wide selection of wines and food, thus confirming the impeccable quality of Italian goods.

PHOTOSTORY - Cannoli @ the San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy (Manhattan)

  • 9/11. Ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant'Agata (VIDEO)

On September 11, 2011 the Consulate General of Italy in New York has commemorated the tenth anniversary of the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attacks with Italian and Italian-American residents in the USA.

After a moment of silence, the names of the 190 Italian and Italian-American victims were read aloud in the hall in front of the bas relief sculpture created by Antonio Manfredi. Back in 2007 Giorgio Napolitano, the Italian President, had met some of the families of the victims in that same spot.

At the ceremony, among the guests, there were the Ambassador of Italy to the United States Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, the new Consul General in New York Natalia Quintavalle, the deputy head of the Holy See delegation to the UN Francis Chullikat, ex congressman Frank Guarini, Matilda Raffa Cuomo who is the founder of Mentoring USA and the wife of the ex-governor of New York, rabbi Arthur Schneier, Natalia Indrimi, the Director of Centro Primo Levi, Lucio Caputo of Gei, the commissioner of the FDNY Salvatore Cassano, retired FDNY chief Daniel Nigro, representatives of the NYPD, Cgie and Comites, the principal of the Scuola d’Italia Anna Fiore, Luis Tallarini, Chairman of the Columbus Citizen Foundation, Joseph Sciame, President/Chair of the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee.

The Ambassador was kind enough to speak with us and share some of his opinions on September 11 and its aftermath. (Full video in Italian)

“Today's ceremony is simple yet greatly significant as it brings us closer to the affection, the feelings, the solidarity and the anguish of who has suffered and still is suffering tremendously for an act that was simply barbaric.”

“As well as keeping the memory, our memory, of that day alive, we have to concentrate on the power of the relationship between Italy and the United States. Ten years ago, our President affirmed something he just reconfirmed with Obama in a recent communication: we all feel American. We did back then, in that horrible moment, and we do now. We all belong to the same community of values, we are part of the same family, a family comprised of human beings who share the same culture.”

“This commemoration is an act of trust between Italy, the United States, the countries who are close to us, who share a partnership with us, and even those who aren't that close to us but are now starting to appreciate the qualities of democracy. We all are focused on strengthening our values, to face challenges and come together. Together in equality, in a partnership with equal respect, not any sort of supremacy. Together we can grow ideologically and economically.”

“The day after September 11, the Security Council, asked the UN countries to work hard on finding the culprits, condemn who was responsible and fight in all ways possible the reality of terrorism. We all are seriously committed to the preservation of our way of life and the prevention of other terrorist attacks. The United States have done a lot and we support them in their actions. They have created a strong Homeland Security Department, efficient Intelligence Agencies, and useful instruments inside the Ministry of Finance to identify financial sources that, masked as charities and social agencies feed terrorism. We are all contributing to the success of these activities.”

GREEN BLUE YELLOW ORANGE RED by Robert Viscusi

The whole country jittery as a squirrel

Had its televisions flickering all night.

This lasted for years and plenty of people

Still keep MSNBC or CNN bedside

    Murmuring alerts, just in case

flood or bomb or tornado strikes

    Or a mountain range collapses`

In clouds of dust on long chains of valley houses,

    white, gray, orange, green, brown.

The young have left TV behind.

When the earthquake shook the college

The secretaries checking CNN found nothing.

    Before the desks stopped swaying.

The students were already reading tweets

    From Virginia Massachussetts Pennsylvania.

Blood America, now a shark, no longer sleeps.

9/11, Ten Years Later. Next Sunday on Facebook

These days, all around the world, people are reminiscing about that tragic Tuesday that changed forever the lives of thousands of people. Everybody is talking, writing and tweeting about it.

Next Sunday, each newspaper will be out with an issue dedicating space to the anniversary, each TV show will feature an expert’s opinion, archive clips of the attack, images of fear and despair in a wounded, unrecognizable New York City.

The way i-Italy decided to commemorate 9/11 takes a different direction.  Less talk, more time to think.

Next September 11, we will be observing a minute of Silence. We will be taking back a minute of quietude from that day, ten years ago, when after 10:30 AM EST minutes could not be quiet or peaceful anymore, and the passing time became scary, sorrowful, and fatal for many.
We’ll be taking a minute of time for ourselves, a minute of time to remember and to analyze. Time to dedicate a prayer to the victims, time to be thankful for our safety today, time to wish that the world will not be witnessing anything similar to what we all could see or watch, wherever we were, as it happened, in a state of helplessness and dismay.

On our Facebook page, we have created an event to publicize our initiative taking place at 10:30 sharp, EST time, and we are inviting you to join us, from wherever you are going to be, for a silence that will be as loud as numerous we are going to be.

One thousand people will be attending, and the number grows by the minute. You are welcome to attend too. Please join us now at:  http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=253234868042914
