    The holidays are over but not the outrage in Rome over the huge piles of rubbish, worse than ever after the Christmas season. The streets are littered, including in the historical center. This being the country that gave us Machiavelli, the rubbish also stinks of politics.
  • After over two years in office, Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino has resigned after being dogged by restaurant receipts claimed as official entertaining, but apparently personal. In truth, much of the harsh reaction against Marino is due to the slow progress in Roman preparations for the Jubiliee year that begins Dec. 8. But there are two sides to every story, even this one.
  • As the only country left in Western Europe to not have same-sex marriage legalized, Italy is taking steps regionally to provide more rights to homosexual couples. This Monday, the transcription of gay marriages performed abroad was ruled in favor of the gay plaintiffs.

In the Eternal City he met his colleague Ignazio Marino, Minister of Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini and the Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. Now, two days of relaxing with his family in the beautiful island of Capri. “Italy is a wonderful place!,” he said.
