The government and the media are saying that the recent indictments of dozens of reputed gangsters prove that La Cosa Nostra's power is undiminished. But there are good reasons to be skeptical of such claims.
The crackdown on Mafia shows Italy at its best. Southern Italian cities, though plagued by many serious problems, no longer seem to be suitable places for a good mobster to hang out. That, at least, is progress.
If critiques of movie/TV shows get beyond the criminality and make more comprehensive literary critiques of these dramas, they will find many positive literary qualities which may explain their popularity with Italian Americans.
