    At a time when Italy has transformed itself into a country of arrival, dealing with the issues of social misunderstanding and bigotry that accompany immigration, this anthology reminds Italians of their own citizens who left the country well over a century ago facing innumerable trials and tribulations in their new locales.
  • The Calandra Italian American Institute, in collaboration with ILICA, organized an insightful panel discussion on Italian American identity: “The New Generation of Americans of Italian Origins: the Value of the Italian Heritage in the 21st Century.”
  • Both the daily horde of exhausted, hungry immigrants landing on the shores of Sicily and those who tend to them after their arrival are in despair. Even before this week some 2,000 immigrants were known to be on the island. Twice those from last year are arriving, even as the season of fair weather has only begun. The police prefect of Sicily has appealed for help from Rome, but in the meantime the Sicilian holding centers are on the verge of collapse. Many, including a number of pregnant women, arrived via Libya from Syria

  • Even as Italian fire fighters brought up more bodies this morning from the moral as well as physical abyss off the isle of Lampedusa, a battle over the Italian law governing immigration rages. Of the over 500 known to have been aboard the ship that burned early Thursday, 143 bodies were recovered while another 220, and possibly more, have been identified inside the sunken ship today. This latest tragedy means that Italy's harsh immigration law is under severe scrutiny.

    For the past two months of the new government Dr. Cécile Kyenge has held down one of the toughest jobs in Italy. As Minister for Integration she must deal with such contentious issues as citizenship for children born in Italy of immigrant parents. Born in Congo, she came to Italy 30 years ago to study opthamology before entering politics in North Italy. For her pains, she has received death threats and literally obscene invectives. But summer weather is bringing new hordes of clandestine immigrants to the southern isle of Lampedusa, and aggravating an already difficult situation.
  • On April 14, Nazir Rafiq Ahmad was returning home via the subway when, between Rome's Terminal Station and Piazza Cavour, he was assaulted by a young man screaming racist insults, the kindest of which was “Go home, foreigner.”
