The Italian Cultural Institute of New York (686 Park Ave) currently hosts an exhibition of the winners of the Premio Selezione 2011. On view are the captivating works of two very promising and talented young Italian artists Nicola Pecoraro and Riccardo Previdi. Both artists’ works continued to stand out during the different phases of the competition’s selection process judged by internationally recognized curators, critics and contemporary art experts, and were selected as winners by the final jury, composed of Riccardo Viale, Alvise Chevallard, Laura Barreca, Paolo Colombo, Pepi Marchetti, Beatrice Merz and Ruben Levi.

The Roman native Nicola Pecoraro (1978), consumed by the study of new aesthetical strategies exploring painting, sculpture and installation, presented a sculpture titled Triton. It is an upright fountain created from cluster of materials, painted using mixed media. This piece is completed with an array of lights that flicker and change, giving diverse views of parts of the sculpture and making each glimpse of it more interesting than the previous one. The piece builds a relationship with both the viewer and the space in which it is exhibited. It mesmerizes and intrigues.

Riccardo Previdi (Milan 1974) displays an exhibit of works titled Wrong Test. Print tests (such as diagrams used for the purpose of calibrating printers) and qualitative tests of consumer goods, images found on the internet are reprinted on A4 paper, crumpled and in turn photographed to be then reproduced with a laser plotter on PVC are meant to reveal the outcome of procedure involved in image production, demonstrating how image can create a surreal perspective in the contemporary collective imagination.

The exhibit, curated by Laura Barreca is on view until November 28th, 2011 at the IIC and is accompanied by the artist’s book published by Nero. For more information visit: http://www.iicnewyork.esteri.it/IIC_NewYork/Menu/Gli_Eventi/
