    New York Loves Festa della Repubblica!

    An important date that of June 2nd 1946, which for Italians marked the passage to a Republic, leaving behind the unfortunate dictatorial experience of the Fascist regime, and opening the doors, very soon after, to the birth of our Constitution: a document still so young that it belongs more to our future than to our past.

    A recurrence which gains new content each year, as is shown by the events that took place these 4 days, organized through the joint efforts of the Italian Consulate in New York, the ICE (Italian Trade Commission), and the ENIT (Italian State Tourism Board).

    Breaching the soil of the enormous wooden door of the consulate's historical building, one found himself (or herself) surrounded by a repetition of colors echoing the Italian flag, not yet overcome by the smell of Italian cuisine coming from the neighboring ICE building, where a tasting and presentation of typical products was taking place.

    The Cultural Institute was transformed into a route, in which one could pause in a photography exhibit before heading through modern art exhibits leading towards a cinematographic conference titled "Cinema Maestro!". As the Consul General Natalia Quintavalle comments "The conference was the 'fil rouge' of these celebrations that want to remind not only the importance of Italian cinema but also that of the contribution by the skillful scenographers and costume designers and of all those who work behind the scenes of these splendid Italian films".

    The treasure hunt organized for the celebration of the Republic also had cinema as its theme and its winners, the "Celere" team composed by Alexo Wandael and Alessandra Rotondi, were rewarded with a gorgeous Vespa Piaggio as the first prize. 

    Another important event was the awarding of the decorations to the order and merit of the Italian Republic. "They were numerous and high-ranking and we were very happy to have the consulate invaded by people eager to celebrate the festa della Repubblica with us". Amongst the decorations to the merit of the Republic, were those awarded to the journalist Giampaolo Pioli, New York correspondant for il Resto del Carlino and to the television host Maria Bartiromo, who through their assiduous work managed to give a detailed account of Italy in the stars and stripes continent. 

    The national anthem sung by the students of the Scuola d'Italia Guglielmo Marconi and the American anthem beautifully interpreted by the singer Theresa Sareo, were followed with much emotion and tear-filled eyes by the many guests, among them: Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi - Italian representative at the UN - and the famous political figure Walter Veltroni who presented his documentary "I Bambini Sanno" (children know) at NYU's Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò.

    Capably managing the entire series of events was the Consul General Natalia Quintavalle, who proved how important it is to represent today's Italy through art and culture, often taken as a model and imitated all over the world. "An Italian system that through its consular activitiy", she pointed out, "could always count on the support and the friendship of the American people". Although this is her last Festa della Repubblica, the Consul General will bring with her the image of New York as a city that loves Italians. "Americans have shown us much love and the Italian-American comunity adores us. I'll bring with me this series of emotions" she concludes. 

    Present at the various celebrations of these eventful days was the new face of ICE, the director Maurizio Forte. "Just a few days after my arrival, I have already been warmly welcomed by New York, and what better occasion than during this celebration?".

    "Our government is well aware of the importance of the American market and we are making big investments and we will soon take part in many events" Maurizio Forte explains.

    "One of the first important events will be FMI Connect taking place from June 8th to the 10th in Chicago, which will have the participation vice minister Calenda. And the Summer Fancy Food presentation is not to be missed." Continues Mr. Forte.

    "In the fall we have an intense program of promotion of food and agricultural products with big distribution chains as well as fashion. At ICE we interpreted Sistema Paese as the promotion of made in Italy within the food, wine and agriculture sectors but we are also giving space to universities where Italian is spoken, especially for young people wishing to work in 'made in Italy'".

    "June 2nd proved to be an occasion to celebrate not only our republic but also our country", he concluded.

    The celebration in honor of the birth of the Republic ended in soft jazz tunes by the Giovanni Guidi Trio, whose masterful performance matched the elegant baroque structure of the consulary structure, as sequences of films that marked the hisorty of Italian cineman were projected on its external façade. 

  • Caccia al tesoro bagnata... E tutti felici!

    Una mattinata soleggiata ha accolto un nutrito gruppo di persone,  di fronte alla sede del Consolato Generale a New York,  tutte pronta a partecipare ad un entusiasmante caccia al tesoro per le vie della città, fortemente voluta dal Console Generale Natalia Quintavalle anche quest'anno. Siamo andati anche noi a seguire il via che li ha visti tutti partire entusiasti per tornare, stanchi, ma con il sorriso, nonostante l'arrivo di temporali nel pomeriggio.

    Infatti, dopo lo strepitoso successo della scorsa edizione, anche quest’anno il Consolato Generale d’Italia a New York ha sponsorizzato, in occasione delle celebrazioni per la Festa della Repubblica italiana,  una caccia al tesoro organizzata dall’Agenzia di eventi e comunicazione “Elastica” e dall’Associazione culturale “Disturbo.
    La metropoli di New York che diventa un interessante percorso nel quale i partecipanti alla gara sono stati impegnati a completare 25 obiettivi nel più breve tempo possibile: un labirinto di passi senza fine che ha permesso ad ognuno di loro di scoprire scorci della città finora inesplorati.
    Una caccia al tesoro fotografica che ha avuto come tema di fondo il Cinema, in una città come New York spesso protagonista di affascinanti pellicole cinematografiche, con l’assegnazione del primo premio consistente in un motorino: una fiammante Vespa Piaggio in perfetto stile “made in italy”.
    Lo spazio antistante la sede del Consolato, luogo di partenza della gara, gremito di uomini, donne e  bambini raggruppati in diverse squadre e muniti di apposite t-shirt , dove le urla di incitamento dei vari partecipanti si alternavano a ritmo  ai suoni che provenivano dal caotico traffico cittadino.
    Tutti i partecipanti, con il piglio di veri e propri atleti, muniti di abbigliamento ginnico e impegnati in  esercizi di riscaldamento muscolare in attesa del fatidico “Pronti partenza e via” per una caccia al tesoro all’ultimo respiro.
    È stato al momento del via della gara che si è assistito ad un divertente aggrovigliarsi di persone in corsa, quasi a confondersi tra di loro, ma con ben chiaro il primo obiettivo da raggiungere nel più breve tempo possibile.
    Aleggiavano tra le diverse squadre  sentimenti apparentemente  contrastanti: l’antagonismo tipico di ogni gara da una parte e dall’altra la voglia di fare comunità  testimoniata ad una caccia del tesoro conclusasi tra abbracci e attestati di stima tra partecipanti di opposte squadre; Uomini e donne che a competizione conclusa si sono trovati, fatalmente, tutti uniti perlopiù dalla stessa nazionalità quasi a ricordare l’imminente data che ha segnato l’unità della Repubblica Italiana.
    Positive sono state le impressioni della Vice Console Isabella Periotto a  gara già ultimata. “Una caccia al tesoro - come specificato dalla stessa - che è stata anche caratterizzata da un improvviso temporale pomeridiano, che ha reso ancor più avvincente e avventurosa la gara, in cui i partecipanti con spirito agonistico non hanno esitato ad armarsi di ombrelli o espedienti vari nel cercare di completare tutti gli obiettivi. Si respirava tanto entusiasmo e competizione tra i partecipanti che comprendevano diverse fasce di età, tutti intenti a raggiungere l’agognato primo premio posto in palio.
    La cerimonia di premiazione si terrà il 2 giugno alle 16:30 presso il Consolato Generale d’Italia a New York, una data a ricordo della nascita della Repubblica Italiana.

  • Palermo Remembers Giovanni Falcone

    It was March 23rd 1992, the date of the tragic explosive attack orchestrated by “Cosa Nostra”, whose victims were the anti-mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and the three agents from his escort: Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo, and Antonio Montinaro.

    Giovanni Falcone, a magistrate who dedicated his life to the fight against the Mafia with great courage and a spirit of service, inventing innovative methods of investigation that are still used today at an international level to combat organized crime.

    A sad page in the history of our country, which has come to its 23rd anniversary, in the vivid and emotional memory of the victims of that grave tragedy, and this year took on the name of “Palermo chiama Italia” (Palermo calls Italy).

    A manifestation, that is, organized by the “Giovanni e Francesca Falcone” Foundation with the precious collaboration of the ministry of instruction’s general management office for student affairs, that took place in the city of Palermo connected to three other Italian squares, packed with students chanting “No to Mafia”.

    A country united against the plague of the Mafia, starting from the essential involvement of schools as the natural spaces in which to start cultivating an education to legality and instigating a civic sentiment, just as Giovanni Falconi always preached in his understanding of the Mafia more as a cultural phenomenon than as a purely criminal one.

    Over 40 thousand students made it out to the squares, some having come from Europe and the United States, in a true airplane of legality, that landed in that same airport, a short distance from the site of the Capaci Massacre, named after the two anti-mafia magistrates Giovanni Falconi and Paolo Borsellino.

    A manifestation with an international reach, so much so as to incite the participation of the NIAF (National Italian American Foundation), one of the most representative Italian American foundation in the United States, based in Washington.

    More specifically, through an agreement between the NIAF, the Fulbright Commission, and the Falcone Foundation, six scholarships were instituted, to be assigned to Sicilian students wishing to study in America and to American students who would want to study in Sicily.

    The Fulbright commission, in fact, since the early 70’s, supports academic exchanges between Italy and the United States in order to create new learning and teaching opportunities through the assignment of scholarships.

    An ambitious project, involving three important institutions with the common goal of promoting research and scientific depth in the field of criminology, as was specified by the president of NIAF, John Viola.

    The institutional ceremony in honor of Giovanni Falcone took place in the high security “bunker” court room of the Ucciardone jail in Palermo, symbolic site where the anti-mafia magistrate managed, a few years before his murder, to institute the “maxitrial” that ended in 19 life sentences of various members of Cosa Nostra; the biggest criminal trial in the world.

    During the ceremony it was the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella who remembered the heroic feats of Giovanni Falcone as reasons for never letting one’s guard down and for renewing day after day the promise of defeating the Mafia, eliminating it from the social structure on the basis of it being incompatible with freedom and civil coexistence.

    An invitation for the youth, that of the head of state, not to be afraid of the Mafia, to go forward in the respect of legality without ever forgetting our civil duties, which grow along with the growth of our rights.

    The manifestation ended with a parade of citizens, filled with colors and music, extending up to the place where Giovanni Falcone lived, where there now is a majestic tree collecting messages, gifts, and flowers dedicated to the magistrate, now a symbol of legality and hope.

    Palermo ricorda Giovanni Falcone

    Era il 23 maggio del 1992  giorno di quel tragico attentato dinamitardo organizzato da “Cosa nostra” che vide vittima il magistrato antimafia Giovanni Falcone, sua moglie Francesca Morvillo, e i tre agenti della sua scorta: Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro.

    Un magistrato, Giovanni Falcone, che ha dedicato la sua vita alla lotta alla Mafia con grandecoraggio e spirito di servizio, inventando metodi investigativi innovativi che ancora oggi vengono utilizzati a livello internazionale per combattere la criminalità organizzata.
    Una pagina alquanto triste della storia del nostro paese  che è giunta al ventitreesimo anniversario, nel vivo ed emozionante ricordo delle vittime di quella immane strage, e che quest’anno ha preso il nome di “Palermo chiama Italia”.

    Una manifestazione, quest’ultima, organizzata dalla Fondazione “Giovanni e Francesca Falcone” con la preziosa collaborazione della Direzione Generale per lo Studente del Ministero dell’istruzione,  la quale si è svolta nella città di Palermo collegata con altre sei piazze italiane gremita di studenti e giovani al solo coro di “No alla Mafia”

    Un paese unito contro il malaffare Mafioso,  a partire dall’ essenziale coinvolgimento delle scuole come naturale luogo dove iniziare a coltivare un’educazione alla legalità e al senso civico, così come aveva sempre insegnato Giovanni Falcone nella sua concezione della Mafia più come fenomeno culturale che prettamente criminale.

    Più di quaranta mila studenti accorsi nelle piazze, alcuni dei quali provenienti dall’Europa e dagli Stati Uniti, attraverso un vero e proprio aereo della legalità, atterrato in quello stesso aeroporto a poca distanza dal luogo della Strage di Capaci, ed intitolato ai due magistrati antimafia Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino.

    Una manifestazione di risonanza internazionale, tanto da aver visto la partecipazione della N.I.A.F. (National Italian American Foundation) ossia una delle fondazioni degli italo americani più rappresentativa negli Stati Uniti con sede a Washington.

    In particolare, attraverso un accordo tra la N.I.A.F., la commissione Fulbright e la Fondazione Falcone sono state istituite sei borse di studio da assegnare a studenti siciliani che desidereranno andare a studiare in America e a studenti americani che vorranno venire a studiare in Sicilia.

    La Commissione Fullbright, infatti, sin dagli inizi degli anni 70 favorisce scambi di carattere accademico tra  l’Italia e gli Stati Uniti al fine di creare nuove opportunità di studio e insegnamento con l’assegnazione di borse di studio.

    Un ambizioso progetto, quindi, che vede coinvolte tre distinte ed importanti Istituzioni con il comune scopo di promuovere la ricerca e l’approfondimento scientifico nel campo della criminologia, così come ha precisato il presidente della N.I.A.F., John Viola.

    Il cerimoniale istituzionale in memoria di Giovanni Falcone si è svolto presso l’aula bunker del carcere palermitano dell’Ucciardone,  luogo simbolo in cui il magistrato antimafia riuscì, pochi anni prima della sua uccisione, ad istituire il maxiprocesso che si concluse con ben diciannove ergastoli a carico di vari appartenenti a Cosa nostra; il più grande processo penale mai celebrato al mondo.

    Durante il cerimoniale è stato il Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella ad aver ricordato le gesti eroiche di Giovanni Falcone come motivo per non abbassare mai la guardia e rinnovare giorno dopo giorno la promessa di dover battere la mafia eliminandola dal corpo sociale poiché incompatibile con la libertà e la civile convivenza.
    Un invito ai giovani, quello del Capo dello Sato, a non avere paura del fenomeno mafioso, andando avanti nel rispetto della legalità senza mai dimenticare i nostri doveri da cittadini i quali crescono in relazione al crescere dei nostri diritti.

    La manifestazione si è conclusa con un corteo cittadino pieno di colori e musica proseguito sino al luogo in cui abitava Giovanni Falcone dove si trova un maestoso albero che raccoglie messaggi regali e fiori dedicati al magistrato e oramai diventato simulacro di legalità e di speranza.
